Bike Rides

We've had some really fun bike rides the past couple weeks. Last week, we rode the Huckleberry Trail all the way to the end in Christiansburg by the mall and Wal-Mart. We crossed a bridge and watched the train go under us. That was pretty neat; not often do you get to look down on to train cars and see what is inside (lots of logs and scrap metal). Yesterday, we drove out to Pulaski County and got on the New River Trail. It was beautiful with great bridges along the trail! We always pack a "picnic" for a break along the trip. These are nothing like gourmet picnics with the Oliphants, but just an apple or banana and some water. Luckily, Joseph is pretty easy to please.

When we first started the trail, Joseph wanted to run instead of ride the bike. He ran for a bit between our bikes and then rode on the back of Marc's for the rest of the trip.

Anniversary Trip

For our last "hurrah" of the summer, we took a trip up to D.C. We wanted to visit Elizabeth before she left for BYU and hear Missy and Roxanne's report from England. Then we came up with a great scheme to leave Joseph for a night while we went downtown to celebrate our anniversary. It was the first time we've gone away for a night since Joseph was born. We had a wonderful time. And I don't think Joseph missed us one bit. In our absence, they went to the Arlington county fair, on long walks, to church (where there was a munch and mingle and Joseph surprised everyone with how much he could munch!). When Rachel told him it was time to pick us up at the metro, he said, "No, I want to RIDE the metro." The next morning when I went in to get him up, he took one look at me and said, "No! Where is RACHEL?" We had a great time. Thank you Oliphants for watching the boy.

We watched the sunset at the Lincoln Memorial

We stayed at the Hilton just a couple blocks from the White House

We wandered around Georgetown University

We ate Chipotle burritos and people watched at Dupont Circle.

Thwarted Bike Trip

Our weekly bicycle ride met rain today. We planned a longer route, packed a picnic lunch, and set off. We stopped not long into our trip to pick some blackberries along the trail. A huge thunderstorm then rolled in. We rode to a gazebo along the trail where we waited out the rain and ate all the blackberries we had just picked.

Stepping Out

Blacksburg's annual "Stepping Out" festival was this weekend. Mostly it is a music festival with artsy musicians and handmade art vendors (think woodsy, not cutesy). We saw alot of dredlocks, tie-dye, and body piercings. Since we're not exactly in the market for expensive hand thrown clay bowls, we spent most of our time checking out the fire engine and the local non-profit booths. I signed up to volunteer on Obama's campaign; Marc found an electric car display.

Joseph was terrified of Sparky the Fire Dog. Make sure to check out Joseph's food pyramid sticker on his cheek--it has been there for a couple days now. Last time he put stickers on his cheeks (his favorite spot), we had to remove them while he slept after about 3 days of wearing them.

First Bee Sting

Joseph had his first bee sting (I think it was actually a wasp or hornet). We had wondered when fear would enter into Joseph's reality, and now we know. He is now afraid of bees. We also see him afraid of falling out of the baby bike seat, not because he ever has, but he did tip once. Here he is pointing out the mark from the stinger and giving his sad face.

Later in the day, Joseph was recovered from the bee sting and thoroughly enjoying the ward field day (and potato chips as you can see here).

Hush Little Baby

Every few days Joseph will ask me to do "Hush Little Baby." This means he brings his sippy cup of milk and climbs in my lap. I hold him like a baby and sing the "Hush Little Baby" lullaby while he drinks and snuggles.
