Surprise, Aunt Rachel!

Have we told you how much we love Aunt Rachel? We wanted to show her how much so we had a surprise birthday party for her...

Joseph loves to help blow out candles (he even blows after singing "Happy Birthday" on the telephone). This from-scratch chocolate cake with homemade fudgy icing tasted much better than it looked (the layers challenged me a bit this time around).

Rachel's friends responded overwhelmingly to the invitation--we packed more than 25 people into our little house.

Matt and Darcy took Rachel to dinner beforehand to make sure she showed up right on time--and surprised.

Joseph was excited beyond description for the surprise. Actually, the first person who arrived was greeted by Joseph with a resounding "SURPRISE!"

Joseph hosted Madison and Scarlett up in his room while the grown-ups talked. Joseph worked his way back and forth between adults and kids; he didn't want to miss a thing.

My sister Catherine and her husband John came to a public health conference in Philadelphia. We made a day trip up to see them while they were in town. We visited the Liberty Bell, Franklin Court, Elfreth's Alley, and of course ate Philadelphia Cheesesteaks on South Street at Jim's--where we had to wait in a line out the door and around the corner.
Our Happy Family at Elfreth's Ally, the oldest inhabited residential street in the U.S.

Waiting in line for a cheesesteak at Jim's.

Joseph enjoyed hanging out with Uncle John.

Remember the BYU Sailing Club?

Remember the good ole' days out on the water? Marc and Joseph Summer 2006.

Marc was the president (Commodore) of the BYU Sailing Club when we were in Provo. Recently that long-ago-life was brought to our remembrance when a reporter from the Daily Universe called to talk to Marc about the 10 Year Anniversary of the Sailing Club. Read here for the story. (Thanks to my good friend Johanna for sending me the link when the story ran)

Sailing is still one of Marc's passions. He frequently checks the sailboats for sale on Craigslist. Someday we'll have another boat, I'm sure. He's still working on me for the "live on a sailboat for a year" idea. We'll let you know.

Pumpkin Update

Remember the pumpkin Joseph was growing? Well, it kept growing until we picked it in October. It even turned orange. Joseph really wanted me to make a pumpkin pie with it; he had to settle for a Jack-o-lantern.

Joseph had several costumes this year. First, for the preschool party, he wanted to wear his regular clothes and a black mask (he called himself "the lone stranger" otherwise known as the lone ranger). (I forgot the camera for the preschool party; sorry Mom!)

On Friday night Joseph was a train engineer for the ward party.

Rachel had a wonderful costume for the ward party. Those Oliphants really know how to celebrate Halloween!

On Halloween night, Joseph was the tow truck "Mater." The neighborhood kids gathered for a costume parade at our neighborhood park.

Marc was a pilot--unfortunately, this is the only picture we have of it. He's holding the helmet which really completes the costume when he is wearing it.

Before the parade and trick-or-treating...

The parade

Rachel and Bryan came for the parade, helped with trick-or-treating and handing out candy, and had Halloween dinner with us.

Our Halloween dinner--complete with Witches Brew, carrying on Moore family tradition. (Mom, the grocery store carries dry ice here so I don't have to travel all over hunting it out like you did each year).

Joseph really liked trick-or-treating, but I think his favorite part was handing out candy at our house. He would say to the kids "How old are you? You are so adorable!" It was pretty funny to watch. He thinks he is such a little man.
