Celebrate Summer: Movie Day!

Popcorn and movies ("Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang" and "The Love Bug").

And a quick trip out for Joseph and Mom during the girls' nap time. We got to meet his new teacher and visit the playground before the first day of school.

This was Anna's first day to be scooting so she was really  having a great time moving about while the big kids were glued to the screen.

Celebrate Summer: Swimming!

Abigail tries to drink the swimming pool water, no matter what I tell her. She also loves the baby pool with all the toys. This works well because Anna is happiest if I sit in the shade with her and watch Abigail, instead of putting her in the water. Joseph loves to swim and swim! And go off the diving board! And DIVE off the HIGH dive!!  He talked me into jumping off the high dive, but I confess I got really scared when  I got to the edge right before I jumped!

We ended the day with dinner at "Taco Tuesday" otherwise known as Cafe Rio. I love how Abigail literally gets covered head to foot in black beans and rice!

Celebrate Summer: Zoo!

The last week before Joseph went back to school, we tried to cram in as much fun as we could. Marc was actually in San Antonio for work so Andrew and I drove the party bus!

We started the week with a trip to the zoo. It was a beautiful, cool day! As we were driving around the zoo trying to find a parking spot, I got a text from Rachel and Elizabeth who, coincidentally, were headed to the zoo!  We met up with them, which of course just doubled the fun!  Between the lot of us, we saw pandas, sea lions, gorillas, reptiles, small mammals, and invertebrates.
The kids were excited to ride on the newly opened carousel. Abigail chose a bird with a worm its mouth. Joseph rode on a grasshopper.

This little munchkin wasn't interested in the Reptile we stayed outside and made silly faces

July Fun: Opera and Alamo

In July, Marc went with his cousin, David, to see La Traviata Opera at Wolf Trap.

He also went to San Antonio, Texas for a conference for work. He saw the Alamo, partied at night, rented a bicycle to explore the San Antonio Missions with its architectural gems including a 300-year-old aqueduct still in use, and checked out the River Walk. He had a great time--I think he wouldn't have minded a few more days of care-free, wife-free, and child-free life!

Beach Day

We had a glorious day at the beach at Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware. It was a quick trip--up and on the road early in the morning and back home with everyone in his or her own bed the same night. We were quickly back to reality that night when Anna spiked a fever and I worried it was because we overheated her; I spent much of the night awake watching and listening to her. But, for the beach day itself, it was a day of heaven.

Joseph loved the water. And I love to watch him. Strong and fearless and full of life.

Abigail was happy in the sand. She radiated and smiled and made friends with everyone around us.

Anna mostly wanted to eat the sand.

We saw dolphins and found a dead horseshoe crab that was amazingly intact--very cool.

A seagull snatched the sandwich from the hand of the woman next to us.

We took turns burying each other in the sand and building sandcastles.

Uncle Andrew proved our energetic hero once again and played catch and boogie-boarded with Joseph for hours.

Refuge in the City

The W&OD Trail runs right through our neighborhood. We enjoy walking the trail and seeing the wildlife, stopping at the playground, and especially playing in the stream...

Furlough Fridays

Due to the federal government sequester, Marc was furloughed from work for a chunk of days this summer. We're really grateful that the furlough (and accompanying 20% pay cut) was only six days--much shorter than originally announced.  Since we didn't have any choice in the matter, we tried to put our "furlough Fridays" to good use.  Most of the days, I worked on my dissertation while Marc enjoyed some time with the children--it was fun for him to see Joseph at swimming lessons and one Friday, he took the kids to a swim party--turned into rainy day walk to the creek-- hosted by our fun friend, Bodie.

Eight Months

Anna is rolling all over the place--anywhere she wants to go through a series of rolls and pivots. She is sitting pretty well (but never unattended since she still  topples regularly), and she loves to stick out her tongue.  She is not crawling, but lifting herself up on straight arms, and Joseph claims he has seen her lift up on her legs.  She is still chewing on everything, but no sign of teeth. She is as smiley and giggly as ever, but wants to be held all the time. She has conquered solids (at least purees) and decided she does not like the car seat anymore. It is fun to see her playing and interacting with her siblings more. Joseph can often cheer her up and make her laugh when we are in the car.

We took her in for her weight check, as requested by the doctor. She was 16 pounds 11 ounces. This means she gained over a pound in the past month and only 4 ounces the previous two months.  In other words, I don't believe it. There must have been a mistake in last month's weigh-in. At any rate, the doctor is content with her growth rate and we can get on with life. (Also, Abigail had her weigh in the same day--she's over 25 pounds so we're celebrating!)

The first shot I snapped for her 8 month picture, she stuck her tongue out! Perfectly captures our girl right now.
Anna's sleeping has regressed in terms of night waking. And she cries when I take her into her bedroom at naptime.  But night bedtime is a sweet time of the day. Anna sometimes "sings" along with me as I sing to her. She also lays her head on my shoulder and seems ready for sleep.

What a big girl!
